Are you ready to be attacked?

Reading time 3 minutes

Cybercrime is the fastest growing form of crime in the world. Therefore, you need to take your precautions, because it is not about whether you will be attacked, but about when.

So you must be ready to minimize the consequences of an attack - for example, by making sure that you can quickly re-establish the company's operations and data after an attack.

Create a safety culture in the company

The first thing you need to do is dress your employees. These are the people who cause 70-80% of all hacker attacks and security breaches, and your employees are your most important asset in the fight against IT attacks.

Dress them up so that they form a massive wall against the cybercriminals. It is especially about creating a critical awareness among employees at all levels so that they are ready to deal with the various kinds of threats. The unconscious actions of employees are the biggest threat to the safety of your company.

The most important threats to IT security and how to prevent them

The threats you face include ransomware, IT crashes, SPAM, phishing, mobile device malware, data leaks and DDoS attacks.

Ransomware: Your data is taken hostage, and cybercriminals demand ransom to undo the effects. For example, you cannot access your operating system or files as they have been encrypted.

  • How do you prevent ransomware?
  • Always have an up-to-date backup of all company data
  • Never open attachments or links from unauthorized emails
  • Keep all software up to date
  • Make sure all employees are dressed.

IT crashes have major consequences for the service you offer - and can have major financial consequences.

It is difficult to guard against IT crashes because your IT environment is vulnerable on so many different points, such as network problems, lack of updates to IT system and website or failed IT projects. You significantly reduce the risk by working with a professional IT provider, who both takes the necessary precautions up front, and responds quickly if problems should arise.

Spam and phishing: Your employees receive emails that may seem very credible - and that try to trick key information from them such as passwords, credit card information or CPR numbers.

Prevent phishing by

  • to be critical when reading emails - look for spelling mistakes and bad translations
  • Never click on links or attachments unless you are 100% sure of the sender. Check with the sender if in doubt.
  • Only provide confidential information on secured websites with SSL certificate (https: // instead of http // :).

Beware of employees' mobile devices. Work mobiles are popular targets for hackers because many companies are unaware of the security risk.

How to prevent hacking of mobile devices:

  • Set security codes on all mobile devices
  • Be critical when downloading apps
  • Use antivirus
  • Do not click on links or attachments unless you are 100% sure of the sender
  • Back up your phone data as well
  • Be careful not to use public networks
  • Update operating system and apps.

Data leaks can damage the company if you leak information about customers or finances, and at the same time damage your credibility and reputation.

To protect your data, it is important that you:

  • are aware of any crime and attackers aware of any crime and attacks
  • encrypt important data
  • implements end-user security.

One of the most important, preventive measures for end-user security is the use of MFA - Multi Factor Authentication, in Danish two-factor authentication - for passwords. This means that a user must both enter a password and then enter a code that has been sent on the mobile, for example. According to Microsoft, two-factor authentication can prevent more than 99% of all password misuse.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks send large amounts of traffic to your Internet server, causing it to become congested and crashing.

Prevent the consequences of DDoS attacks:

  • Have a concrete contingency plan for how you will act in the event of a DDoS attack
  • Indicate who you want to contact if the accident is out - eg customers and partners - and how you want to contact them if your email is down.
