Meet the Lead developer behind Automize's new Rights Management App, Evangelia Miariti and get an insight into what it takes to develop apps.

Evangelia Miariti works as an Application Developer at Automize and has worked as one of the primary developers on the Rights Management App. For her, there is no doubt that the Rights Management App will be able to save companies many hours of manual work.

Evangelia, who is colloquially called "Evi" is the newest addition to Automize's ServiceNow team and originally comes from Greece, this is where she started her education in IT at the University of Patras Electrical and computer Engineering in 2012. After this, she traveled to Denmark with her husband and studied a master's degree in Robot Technology at SDU in Odense, after which she briefly worked at the National Archives before joining Automize.

Why choose to develop apps?

But why exactly this education?

"I thought it sounded cool", explains Evangelia. When Evangelia started her education in Greece, she found that she loved to code, the liberation and the exciting element that many find fascinating in programming and coding had absolutely captured Evi. "I found it incredibly exciting to create something new from scratch, which is a fantastic feeling, it's more than just a job for me", continues Evangelia Miariti.

However, it can sometimes be a bit of a challenge for Evangelia to explain to friends and family what she actually does and works with.

"My family often ask what it is that I actually work with and I find it very difficult to explain the essence of it, so it can often become a very long explanation", mentions Evangelia Miariti with a smile.

I think Machine Learning is super cool!

When Evangelia briefly went unemployed after completing her master's degree, she immediately began working on what she had learned through her education. As a small private project, she developed a program that could differentiate between male and female voices based on audio recordings.

“I made some audio recordings of my friends, both male and female, and then divided them up. I then built a Machine Learning technique which, based on the data I had given it, could find out whether it was a male or female voice," explains Evangelia Miariti.

The first major project was the Rights Management App

Shortly after her employment at Automize, Evangelia began to take on significantly more responsibility as it was clear that she was very skilled and competent in her area of ??work. It was also here that Evangelia started getting to know Automize's new Rights Management App, which she would work with a lot more in the future.

"My first major project at Automize was the new Rights Management App. I got an explanation of the app's purpose and technical structure so far from our VP of Software, Lasse Kjelstrup-Hoop. I then started working with some of the tables that are included in the app, then I moved on to develop our Role Based Access system in the app," explains Evangelia Miariti.

Evangelia goes on to explain that it is without a doubt the biggest project she has worked on so far and which includes more aspects than just development. "The project combines both development and a sales element, which is new for me. This means that I have to both develop and present the app afterwards to potential customers and stakeholders. This is a good opportunity to both practice selling and my Danish language skills, so I'm looking forward to it," says Evangelia Miariti with a smile on her face.

Writing code that works optimally makes me incredibly happy

For Evangelia, the project with the Rights Management App has been a good opportunity to learn many new things and fill up the "toolbox" a little bit more. In addition to getting better at development in general and her presentation skills and Danish language skills, the project has also left her with other skills.

"I have started writing Runbooks in Azure, which is a big part of how the Rights Management App works, so it is a good opportunity for me to learn this element. Generally speaking, I love to code, when my code works as it should, I am always very happy. So when I get tasks where I have to code, I am definitely in my right element!” explains Evangelia Miariti.

Evangelia continues to explain more about which tasks she is still working on and what she is keen to learn more about. "At the moment I am still working on our new Rights Management App, which I have helped develop together with our VP of Software. I found this very exciting and is definitely something I would like to do more of in the future. In addition, I am still new to ServiceNow and in the long term I would like to work on becoming more skilled in this area.”

Some things can be harder than others to learn, but if you have the right perspective, your work tasks can quickly become more fun. "I have started working a lot with Flowdesigner in ServiceNow, which is incredibly exciting. It's almost like a game when you sit with it, which makes it incredibly fun to work with," explains Evangelia Miariti with a smile.

What challenges have there been?

Even though Evangelia has learned many new exciting things and gained a lot of independent responsibility, the road there has naturally not been without small bumps. "Working with Role Based Access was a big challenge for me, I had to really think about how I built the different groups and roles. There was one problem in particular where I had to ensure that users with specific roles were either included and excluded from their respective groups even when their roles were changed. I remember sitting with this problem for a few days before I got it under control", states Evangelia Miariti while smiling.

Although Automize's new Rights Management is ready on the ServiceNow Store, this does not mean that Evangelia has finished working with the app. "The version we have on the ServiceNow Store can work with Active Directory, but now I am working on making the Rights Management app compatible with Azure Active Directory. After that, we could perhaps work on making the Rights Management App compatible with Microsoft Teams, so there is plenty of potential implementations to work with," states Evangelia Miariti.

For Evangelia, it is quite clear that working with the Rights Management App has given her a lot of valuable experience and taught her many new things. Evangelia can state that one of the things she believes to be the most important thing she has learned is to continuously test the things you do. "You have to test your applications many times before you can make sure that they are 100% secure and ready to be sent to the market. It is incredibly important to take a step back once in a while and test the quality of what you have done," concludes Evangelia Miariti.

About the Rights Management App

The Rights Management App enables you to manage your Active Directory form ServiceNow. This gives you a full overview of users, groups and memberships directly in ServiceNow and enables time limited memberships, where the membership is automatically removed once it expires in ServiceNow.
